When it comes to sleep, I consider it to be one of the most important factors of our lives. Not only does sleep aid our body in it's recovery from our daily activities, but it also helps protect our mental health, physical health and all in all, leads to a long and healthy, happy life.
If you've been struggling to sleep recently and have been feeling the knock on effect then this Primal Turmeric Sleep Shot may just become your new best friend. I think we all know the value of getting a decent night's sleep but when we don't, the first thing we shouldn't be doing is running to the local chemist for a dose of sleeping pills. Oh no. Instead, it's time to go back to basics with the amazing ingredients Mother Nature created for us.
This recipe is simple. Fact. It's made with 9 Primal friendly ingredients, all of which our Primal ancestors would have used themselves. However, the two main stars of this recipe have to be turmeric and ginger - both of which provide our bodies with some pretty wonderful health benefits.
Let's start with turmeric. At its base, turmeric helps to reduce inflammation, lower your blood sugar levels, help the liver to detoxify, boosts your immune system, protects your digestive system and may help to reduce the risk of diabetes. All of these benefits can help promote better sleep quality and allows you to wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
When it comes to ginger, it's actually the root of the Zingiber officinale plant and is closely related to turmeric and cardamom. Ginger is well known for its calming effects and helps remove toxins from the body, promotes good gut health, reduces muscle soreness, promotes muscle recovery and contains anti-inflammatory properties. All of which, yup you guess it, helps promote a better night's sleep.
When it comes to this recipe, I like to think that the focus is on its benefits, rather than the taste. Whilst my Primal Turmeric Sleep Shot boasts a very sweet flavour, it does come with quite a kick of flavours. The best way to enjoy this health drink is with true shot style: throw it back and reap the benefits.
Lately, I've been making this Turmeric Sleep Shot at the beginning of the week and enjoying a shot every evening an hour before bed. Not only has it helped me to sleep better, but my sleep pattern has also become less interrupted throughout the night. As a result, I'm waking up increasingly refreshed and ready for a busy day.
Whilst turmeric and ginger are the key ingredients in this recipe for sleep quality, I've also included a few other health loving ingredients that work with the combination of turmeric and ginger. The addition of the black pepper and chilli increases the bioavailability (absorption) of the turmeric and the coconut oil supports the turmeric's fat soluble. All of these ingredients are needed in order for the body to absorb the turmeric properly.
As for the raw organic honey, it helps sweeten the recipe whilst providing our bodies with anti-inflammatory properties. The carrot also supports eye health, promotes healthy skin and supports the function of the liver.
Nowadays, many people consume turmeric drinks such as lattes and smoothies, all whilst being unaware of the fact that they're missing out on the health benefits of turmeric. You see, many recipes fail to mention that the active compound of turmeric, curcumin, is insoluble in water and to gain the benefits of curcumin the bioavailability needs to be increased. Therefore, as this recipe contains coconut water, I've added a teaspoon of coconut oil too as curcumin is in fact soluble in fat.
So next time you're struggling to sleep, or find yourself a little down in the dumps, give my Primal Turmeric Sleep Shot a whirl an hour before bed. Bottoms up!
Primal Turmeric Sleep Shot
- 1 tbsp grated ginger
- Pinch of black pepper
- Pinch of fresh chilli
- 1 tbsp raw organic honey
- 1 1/2 cups organic coconut water
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 60g grated carrot
- 1 tsp coconut oil
In a food processor add all of your ingredients and blend everything together until you have no large chunks. You should end up with 'bits'. Almost like fresh orange juice.
