Primal Superfood Hot Chocolate

Just because you’re living a Primal lifestyle, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to miss out on the finer things in life – especially when it comes to the festive holidays.

So let me tell you my Primal friends, hot chocolate is definitely something you do not need to give up this Winter. In fact, this recipe is so Primal friendly that it gets a 10/10 primal rating from me!

With this recipe you can make yourself a deliciously rich and dark hot chocolate drink – minus the CARBS and high sugar content! All you need are 4 ingredients and you’ll soon find yourself in a soft blanket of hot chocolate goodness. You know one of the best things about Primal cooking? You can leave out the ingredients that provide you with nothing but empty calories and replace them with goodness.

My Primal hot chocolate recipe isn’t just your average mug of steamy, rich, hot chocolate. Instead, I’ve created a superfood hot chocolate that has a delicious combination of raw cacao, turmeric (a healing spice), cinnamon and almond milk that will keep you warm, cozy and in top condition for the colder season.

Raw cacao is something I suggest we all have stocked up in our cupboards. It’s a great ingredient to have on hand when the sweet tooth comes knocking and with it you can create some delicious and satisfying recipes that are healthy and Primal friendly. Plus, nobody will know the difference!

Cacao powder is produced by cold-pressing un- roasted cocoa beans from the cacao tree. Unlike regular cocoa powder, which is roasted at high temperatures, by keeping the temperature of the cacao cool the process preserves living enzymes. Cacao contains more than 250 different nutritional ingredients, making it possibly the best source of antioxidants from plants on the planet and the rawest of all chocolates. It’s rich in polyphenols, has more than a dozen times more antioxidants than blueberries and is known to assist with liver and pancreatic functions (detoxing and sugar control).

Turmeric

Turmeric, another ingredient found in this recipe, is also another superfood that you should be including in your weekly diet as it’s one of the most powerful, natural medicines that we can add to our food. A few more benefits of tumeric are:

  • Contains bioactive compounds with medical properties
  • It’s a natural anti-inflammatory compound
  • Decreases the chances of your body catching diseases and illnesses
  • Curcumin (main active ingredient in tumeric) can increase brain levels of BDNF
  • Curcumin decreases your chances of heart disease
  • Can prevent cancer
  • May be useful in preventing (and treating) Alzheimer’s disease

That’s not just it though, I’ve also included another key superfood ingredient…

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is often looked upon as just your typical winter spice however, it really does pack a punch of many health benefits. Cinnamon is a powerful spice that has been used medicinally (and in recipes) for thousands of years. Nowadays it’s becoming more and more popular because of its widespread health benefits, not to mention its distinctly sweet, warming taste and ease of use in recipes. Having a teaspoon of cinnamon in your morning cup of tea or breakfast can actually help reduce your blood sugar levels for the start of the day which equally helps cure your sweet tooth, too.

The health benefits of cinnamon come from the bark of the tree, Cinnamomum and it contains several special compounds, all of which are responsible for many health promoting properties such as:

  • Better digestion
  • A stronger immune system
  • Increased heart health by better protection
  • Can help fight diabetes
  • Due to its antioxidant abilities, cinnamon can help protect against DNA damage, cell mutation, and cancerous tumor growth

So as you can, there are many reasons why my Primal superfood hot chocolate recipe wins the battle over your usual sugary, CARB ridden hot chocolate in the Bennett household. If it tastes just as good as the original but 10x healthier, then what’s not to love?

Primal rating: 10/10
