Primal Metabolism Booster Coffee

Print this recipe

Last week my Primal team and I met for a meeting and funnily enough, we all shared our love for the same Primal approved morning coffee. It’s an incredibly simple recipe but it’s an amazing drink to start the morning with and hey, what’s wrong with giving your morning coffee a little upgrade?

Personally, I find this drink a great way to help kick start my metabolism in the morning whilst staying in a fasted state. So what’s the secret to making your usual morning cup of coffee a metabolism booster? Coconut oil. That’s right. Every morning I add a tsp of coconut oil to my cup of organic coffee because it contains many health benefits. The benefits of adding coconut oil to your coffee include a boost of energy, kickstarts your metabolism (which is possible whilst fasting), boosts your immune system and leaves you feeling fuller for longer thanks to the healthy fats coconut oil contains.

Now, just in case you’re wondering… Yes, coconut oil does contain saturated fat. However, saturated fat is not the demon we’ve been led to believe by many misleading companies and articles. Since the birth of the low-fat diet – a diet I followed for more than two decades, kept me overweight and provided me with no energy – vegetable fats have been praised for being unsaturated and therefore, good for the heart. That is simply incorrect. It is just as wide of the mark as when the government told us to purchase diesel cards as they were supposedly better for the enviornment.

You see, vegetable oils are rich in Omega 6 which, on it’s own and without the balance of omega 3, causes inflammation – the biggest cause to nearly all Western diseases. When we consume vegetable oil our digestive system tries to break it down in the mouth, however, the majority of breaking down what we eat takes place is the small intestine. In order to break down the large fat molecules, bile is produced which then deliver’s larger molecules to your bloodstream and carries to your fat deposits. If your body then needs energy from fat then it will make a withdrawal and use just some of that fat. All in all, it’s a long process in order for your body to break down the fat which would take much longer for your body to gain the energy it needs. Whereas, the fat from coconut oil is much more less complicated for the body to consume.

The medium chain triglycerides that coconut oil is made up of, bypasses all of the faff that vegetable oil has to go through. MCT’s do not need to be broken down simply because they’re shorter chain’s than other fats and they’re transported directly into your bloodstream. In turn, this means that your body can quickly get the energy and instead of the body storing the oil as fat, it uses it as fuel which then kick starts our metabolism and provides our body with efficient energy.

Thanks to the medium chain triglycerides that coconut oil is made up of, it means that coconut oil is more rapidly absorbed by the body and instead of the body storing the oil as fat, it uses it as fuel which in turn kick starts our metabolism and provides our body with efficient energy. All in all, adding a tsp of organic coconut oil to our morning cup of coffee will certainly not make you pile on the pounds and actually, it’s extremely good for our body. Here are a few other benefits coconut oil has:

  • Can prevent heart disease and high blood pressure.
  • Can heal urinary infections and therefore helps to protect the liver.
  • Reduces inflammation.
  • May help cancer patients recover thanks to the ketones produced in the digestion of coconut oil.
  • Boosts your immune system.
  • The MCFA’s in coconut are easily absorbed by the brain and therefore can help improve memory and increase brain function.
  • Improves energy.

So if I’m yet to convince you to start adding a tsp of coconut oil to your morning cup of coffee, then delve deep into the research yourself. There are over 1,500 studies proving that coconut oil may be one of the healthiest foods on the planet. To make this recipe my own (I can’t really call adding a tsp of coconut oil to coffee my own recipe really) I’ve also added a tsp of lucuma powder to truly make this a superfood morning cup of coffee that provides the drink with a hint of caramel. Lucuma powder comes from the lucuma fruit and has a unique caramel flavour (truly it does). It contains iron, which can help reduce the feeling of tiredness and fatigue, as well as potassium and zinc which are both important for supporting our nervous system and cognitive system.
