Lets start by reaffirming that Primal Cure is not a diet, you’re simply going to commit to eating as close to what primal man ate. Its even advertised in the bible under Genesis 45;18 “And ye shall live off the fat of the land”.
When it comes to all animal produce, it is extremely important to buy as natural as you can possibly afford. I am sure you have heard the saying, “You are what you eat”, but when it comes to animal produce the saying should be extended to “You are what your food eats”. Free ranged eggs, free range chicken, grass fed cows all provide you with heaps of benefits. They are rich in vital vitamins and have a really healthy Omega 3 to Omega 6 balance. Cows, pigs, chickens and lambs that are allowed to grow naturally, in natural conditions, feeding on their natural primal diet, are really good for your health. But those that are forced to eat corn and grains, food stuff that you now know turns to sugar in the gut are nowhere near as healthy for you to consume. Remember one of the core principles of Primal Cure, is that you are supposed to eat what we are designed to eat. It’s exactly the same for cows. They were designed to eat grass, not mass-produced cheap corn full of Omega 6. The food is so unsuited to them that their stomachs bloat like a hot air balloon and often the factory famer has to stuff their feed full of antibiotics.
The antibiotics are not just used so that the cattle can digest food that they weren’t designed to eat, but to also to supersize them. The antibiotics kill off all of the bacteria that informs the cow that they are full, so the cow keeps on eating and becomes obese. And, as you are what you eat, there is lots of research to suggest that if you eat meat or poultry that has been enhanced with antibiotics, a certain amount of it makes its way on to our dinner plate. So if you are constantly eating meat produced in factories and not fields, you could be damaging both the helpful bacteria in your gut and your hormones too.
And, we are not just talking the odd cow that needs drugs, in the USA over 75% of all antibiotics consumed are by animals that make their way onto the dinner plate. Its not just antibiotics, some cows are on hormones and steroids! Add all of this to the immoral cramped conditions of the factories they live in and you start to realise that factory meat has virtually nothing in common to the meat our ancestors once hunted for.
From the brilliant book written by Dr Mark Hyman, “Eat Fat Get Thin”, he informs us; “The ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fats in grass fed beef is about 1.5 to 1. In grain-fed beef it is about 7.5 to 1”. Dr Hyman then goes on to say, “It also has two or three times as much conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) as grain-fed beef, a potent antioxidant that is protective against heart disease, diabetes, and cancer and even helps with weight loss metabolism”. What’s more, as I previously mentioned about how they stuff chemicals into big vats of wine to stabilise them for shipping, what do you think might happen to beef leaving an industrialised factory farm, hundred if not thousands of miles from where the cow grew? If you can buy local meet, it not only supports your local community, it supports your health too.
So next time you hear of a medical report saying meat is not good for you, it probably stems from either miss-interoperated research or only looked at chemically created industrialised factory produced meat!
If you are still not convinced that you should go organic for everything, then get hold of a copy of Eat Your Heart Out by Felicity Lawrence. The books subtitle is, “Why the food business is bad for the planet and you health”. Felicity goes behind the scenes of milk production, cattle and pig farming and much more. When I read the book, it concerned me so much about the produce we were consuming as a family, that I told my wife that under no circumstances was she ever to buy non-organic food again. It’s a brilliantly insightful book, however the thing that took me by surprise was SalmoFanTM. Felicity reveals, “I have personally never felt the same about farmed fish since discovering the SalmoFanTM – a little fan of colour charts that look for all the world like a sheaf of Dulux paint charts. The SalmoFanTM specify how much food dye a salmon farmer should administer with his feed depending on how strong a pink colour he wants his end product to be”.
Primal Cure Organic or Outlawed Principle: Caveman ate organically and so should we. We were not designed to consume meat, poultry or dairy produce full of hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and other dangerous toxins. The food in your fridge must be organic or outlawed!
