Best Tips for Healthy Hair and Scalp At Home

It’s funny isn’t it, we all take great care to get our hair cut, dyed and styled regularly, but when it comes to hair care in between salon visits, we simply resort to the most convenient and cheapest products on our supermarket shelves. That, or we’re cleverly drawn to toxic labels such as ‘luxurious’, ‘shiny’ and ‘repairing’.

Nowadays, when it comes to looking after our hair we simply think of our hair strands. I mean, why wouldn’t we? Yet, when it comes to a healthy head of hair, our scalp is just as important as our luscious locks. This is imperative for everyone, including men and children. You see, because the scalp of our skin is subject to a lifetime of damaging effects, including environmental damage, UV damage free radicals, it’s important that we look after it properly. The same goes for our locks, too.

It’s no secret that as we age, the vitality of our bodies decreases. Of course, this is a completely normal process, but because our skin is a major part of the body’s defence, it’s exposed to a lot more stress. And when it comes to our scalp, the skin is exposed to the same, if not more.

Ageing

Firstly, while ageing may not be considered as first-hand damage, it can still affect the health of our hair follicles. Our scalp ages a little differently than our skin. Instead of wrinkles, our scalp will start to struggle when it comes to the maintenance of healthy follicles and we’ll find that our follicles are unable to detoxify themselves. When these become damaged, it can often lead to hair thinning, hair loss, lack of moisture and nutrients.

UV rays

I think it goes without saying that almost all of us have experienced scalp sunburn once throughout our lives. It’s not pretty, nor is it comfortable to deal with. But what many of us forget is that, just like the skin on our bodies, our scalp is also prone to UV damage. Many hair protectants and products contain UV absorbers, however, most of these may not contain sunscreen protection. Just like ageing, when our scalp becomes damaged from UV rays, the follicles become damaged and therefore, the same results are likely to happen.

Dirt and product build-up

Another sign of an unhealthy scalp is the presence of sebum (oil), dirt and other product residues. All of which can build up on the scalp and cause annoying problems. The first sign of product build-up is an itchy, red and irritated scalp. It’s important that we only use natural products to avoid product build up in this place. This is caused by the products use of toxic and harsh ingredients. A clean scalp free of build-up, oil and dandruff will promote good cell turnover and hair growth, which of course, is what we all want.

As for our hair, dirt and product build-up can lead to lifeless, heavy and dry strands. Imagine an extra heavy weighted coat around your hair strands. That’s exactly what product build-up feels like. Once you start using natural products, you’ll soon notice the difference in the texture and weight of your hair.

When it comes to certain scalp conditions/irritations…

Although scalp conditions and irritations, such as psoriasis and dandruff cannot be helped, they can certainly be treated to help maintain the condition of the scalp. The same goes for a dry, lifeless scalp, too. If not treated, then symptoms can certainly be eased with a little scalp TLC.

Just because scalp conditions affect the scalp as a whole, it unfortunely doesn't mean that our strands are safe from being affected. When our scalp is affected it can lead to a whole number of problems including dryness, hair loss, blocked follicles and brittle.

So, now you know the signs of a damaged/irritated scalp, here are our top Primal tips for maintaining healthy scalp and hair at home…

100% Natural Hair Revitaliser

To tackle the main results of unhealthy hair and scalp, we'd firstly suggest our Primal 100% Natural Hair Revitaliser. It's a great way to nourish your scalp thanks to its blend of 100% natural oils. As part of our Primal Salon range, this hair revitaliser spray is suitable for all hair types. We've used nature’s finest aromas of orange and peppermint, as well as olive oil and sunflower oil to help condition your hair and scalp.

We also believe that it's an optimal choice to introduce your hair to the power of natural goodness, especially if you've gone through years of various chemical treatments on your hair (hair colouring, shampoos, conditioners and perms) as well as continual heat styling.

Not only is our hair revitaliser jam-packed with naturally occurring Vitamin E, oleic acid and lioneic acid, but it also contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This means it's a star product for taking care of your scalp to improve the health of hair follicles which, all in all, will help healthy hair growth.

To use, we suggest applying our Primal hair revitaliser to the hair and scalp. Massage with circular motions. Wait for between 30 minutes to 3 hours, keeping hair in a towel. Then wash your hair with a natural shampoo.

Hair, Skin and Nails

Let’s get straight under the bonnet of this one (pardon the pun). At Primal Cure we've assembled 20 powerful extracts, minerals and vitamins for healthier hair, skin and nails with our Primal Hair, Skin and Nails supplement. Hopefully, you know this already, but our hair needs a variety of nutrients to encourage growth and stay healthy. Biotin (Vitamin B7) is known in the hairdressing trade as Vitamin H; hence the synthetic versions in shampoos and conditioners. Therefore, it’s so important that our product is formulated with 200% of the NRV.

Copper is also another mineral known to contribute to normal hair pigmentation, so again, we’ve used 200% of the NRV.

By consuming our Primal Hair, Skin and Nails supplement daily, it will help to encourage good hair condition and will also help benefit your overall well being.

DIY Scalp Exfoliator

As we mentioned earlier, regular exfoliation of the scalp not only helps to maintain the condition of your scalp, but it will help to keep the strands of your hair in tip-top condition too. By getting rid of the impurities that can block hair follicles, you can help promote blood circulation, encourage hair growth and get rid of stubborn bacteria.

Thanks to the organic apple cider vinegar used in this recipe, it helps to detoxify the scalp and get rid of impurities known to cause dandruff, hair loss, and oily locks.

The coconut oil, along with the raw organic honey, will help nourish the scalp and hair and give it that extra bit of moisture.

Recently, we got our Primal Cure Social Media Manager, Hannah to experiment with a Primal-friendly DIY scalp exfoliator and, after just one use, she swore that the results were almost immediate. For extra scalp and hair TLC, we recommend using our hair revitaliser before the scrub. After following the instructions above, simply wash the hair revitaliser out in the shower and follow it up with the scrub before rinsing your hair with your favourite natural shampoo.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp raw organic honey
  • 3-4 tbsp rock salt
  • 1 tsp organic apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp melted Primal Coconut Oil

Method

  • In a bowl, mix together all of your ingredients.
  • Once you’re in the shower, rinse your hair and apply a good amount of the scrub to the palm of your hand. Using your fingertips, scoop small amounts and start rubbing into your scalp. Repeat this process until satisfied that your scalp has had a good scrub. After a minute or so, rinse well and shampoo.

All in all, to help maintain healthy hair at scalp at home, we highly recommend using the above tips weekly. Our Primal Hair, Skin and Nails supplement would be great to take every day. Whilst our DIY scrub and Natural Hair Revitaliser would be great to use once a week. Why not make it a weekly routine every Sunday evening? Simply moisturise your scalp and hair with the revitaliser and then scrub it out with our DIY scrub. Perfect!
